Overwatch 2 is Cancelled
Back in 2019, Blizzard announced their plans for Overwatch 2 with the main attraction over the original being a full-on co-op PVE mode.
While the original Overwatch primarily offered PVP modes, co-op PVE missions were sprinkled out as special events to a generally positive reception but didn't feel like a fleshed-out story. The promise of a sequel that would double down on the PVE with a full campaign story was the appeal and promise of Overwatch 2 since its initial pitch. That pitch didn't come to fruition when Overwatch 2 was released with a similar PVP to the first Overwatch and a loose promise to eventually release the PVE at a later date. While Overwatch 2 is free-to-play, the changes came to mixed responses as to whether or not the PVP alone was worth axing access to the original Overwatch. The overall expectation was that the PVE mode would justify the updated engine, and refinements accomplished with Overwatch 2, even with the minimal justifications for calling Overwatch 2 a sequel to the original game when it felt like a glorified content update.
