Halo Is On a PlayStation Now. Let That Sink In.
For twenty-four years, one sentence was just true: you could not play a mainline Halo on a PlayStation. On July 28, that sentence dies.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a ground-up Unreal Engine 5 rebuild of the game that started it all - the original Halo: Combat Evolved - and it's launching on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC all at once. $49.99, day one on Game Pass. The thing that used to be the whole reason to buy an Xbox is now something you can boot up on a Sony console. Wild.

What Campaign Evolved actually is
This isn't a lazy up-res of the 2001 original, and it's not the 2011 Anniversary re-skin either. Halo Studios rebuilt the campaign inside Unreal Engine 5 - new lighting, new asset work, reworked animation - but kept the level flow and the sandbox that made the original hit different. The headline stuff:
- Three brand-new missions that expand the original story, not just remaster what shipped in 2001
- Full campaign co-op, online, built for how people actually play now
- Modern controls and accessibility so a game made for the original Xbox controller feels right on a DualSense or mouse and keyboard
The pitch is clean - the best FPS campaign of its generation, rebuilt for 2026, finally playable by a console audience that has literally never legally touched it.
Why this is bigger than one remake
The story isn't "old game looks nice again." It's what it represents. Halo defined Microsoft's hardware identity for two decades. Putting the very first one on PlayStation is the emotional peak of the multiplatform pivot they've been running for two years now. For anybody who grew up in the console-war trenches, watching Chief load up on a PS5 lands somewhere between historic and just plain surreal.
The part I'm watching
Let me hedge here, because it matters. This is one 2001 campaign rebuilt - not a new Halo, not the full trilogy. So the value question is real: is $49.99 for one rebuilt campaign plus three missions and co-op the move, or is that a "wait for a sale" situation? And do the new missions respect the original's tone, or do they feel bolted on? We'll see once it's in our hands on the 28th. That tension is exactly why this is worth covering instead of just reporting.
The verdict
