I Ranked Every Handheld Gaming PC by Value - Not Hype

Before we get into it, let's kill the elephant in the room. "Steam Deck killer" is a phrase outlets love to slap on every new handheld to grab attention - and almost none of them actually kill the Steam Deck. So I'm not ranking these by hype or by spec-sheet flexing. I'm ranking them by value - what you actually get for what you actually pay. That's the only ranking that respects your wallet.

Handhelds are also the fastest-growing corner of PC gaming right now. A laptop GPU just topped the Steam Hardware Survey for the first time ever, and handhelds are a big part of why. This category matters more every year.

How I'm scoring this

Three things decide value, in this priority order:

1. Experience - does the software get out of your way, or do you fight Windows every time you wake it up?
2. Performance per dollar - frames you can actually use, at a price that makes sense
3. The intangibles - screen, battery, ergonomics, the stuff you feel after hour two

The value ranking

1. Steam Deck (OLED) - still the king of overall experience. Bar none, this is the one I recommend to the most people. SteamOS just works - sleep, resume, verified games, no driver roulette. It's not the most powerful handheld, but the whole experience is so clean that raw power stops mattering as much. You can get almost three Steam Deck OLEDs for the price of some of the premium stuff. That's value.

2. ROG Ally X - best raw power for the money if you want horsepower. If you specifically want more frames and you're willing to manage Windows a bit, the Ally X is the performance pick. The screen's great, the power's there. Just know you're signing up for the Windows handheld experience, which means occasional fighting.

3. Legion Go 2 - the big beautiful OLED flex. The large OLED screen is chef's kiss, and it's a genuine option if screen size and detachable controllers are your thing. But it's premium-priced, and you're paying for the screen and the form factor as much as the performance. Great device, narrower value case.

4. The "install Bazzite and transform it" tier. Here's a pro move a lot of people miss - a bunch of the Windows handhelds get a serious glow up when you throw Bazzite (or SteamOS where supported) on them. If you're comfortable doing that, a mid-tier Windows handheld can leap up this list. Bazzite is the move for the tinkerer who wants the SteamOS feel on non-Valve hardware.

🤘 The best handheld isn't the most powerful one. It's the one whose software doesn't make you want to throw it across the room at 11pm.

Buy it if / skip it if

• Buy the Steam Deck OLED if you want the best all-around experience and the least hassle - which is most people.
• Buy the Ally X if you specifically want max frames and don't mind managing Windows.
• Buy the Legion Go 2 if the big OLED and detachable controllers are worth a premium to you.
• Skip the hype devices that market on specs but ship janky software - or at least plan to reflash them with Bazzite before you judge them.

The verdict

Value isn't the biggest number on the box. It's the experience you actually get for the money, and on that measure the Steam Deck OLED is still the one to beat. Everything else earns its spot based on what you specifically need - power, screen, or a project to tinker with. Figure out which of those you are, and the right handheld picks itself.
