Palworld finally hit 1.0 - and that giant World Tree is open at last

by James@th3brink

For over two years, Palworld players have been staring at a giant tree on the horizon they couldn't reach - a big red barrier standing between them and whatever Pocketpair was hiding up there. As of July 10, that barrier is gone. The World Tree is open.

Palworld hit 1.0, and it's the biggest update the game has ever gotten - 27 pages of patch notes big. If you bounced off it back when it was the "Pokémon with guns" meme that pulled 40 million players and then quietly slipped out of the conversation, this is the version that finally finishes the thought.

What's actually new

The headline is the World Tree - that landmark you've been able to see on the northwestern horizon since the January 2024 early access launch, blocked off the entire time. In 1.0 it becomes the game's main endgame zone: high-level enemies, new resources, story missions, and an actual conclusion to the main story. After two years of "it's early access, the story isn't done," there's finally an ending.

And it's not just the tree. Here's the haul:

  • 72 new Pals (47 brand new, 25 variants) to catch and raise
  • Sunreach (the Sky Islands) - floating landmasses above the main map with their own Pals, their own civilization, and aerial traversal
  • Level cap raised from 65 to 80
  • Roughly double the explorable landmass compared to the early access map
  • The full conclusion to the main story arc

That's not a patch. That's a sequel's worth of content stapled onto the game you already own.

The part that actually matters

It's free for existing players.

If you bought Palworld at any point during early access, 1.0 is a free update - you don't pay a cent for the World Tree, the Sky Islands, or any of it. And if you never bought in, it launched day one on Game Pass across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

🤘 That's the move I wish more studios would copy. Two years of early access, and instead of charging you for the "real" version at the finish line, Pocketpair just hands the ending to the people who funded the ride. That's how you keep a community that already gave you 40 million players.

Never played? Here's the pitch

If you somehow missed the 2024 hype - Palworld is a survival-crafter where you catch creatures called Pals, then put them to work. They fight alongside you, sure, but they also run your base: mining, farming, hauling, manning the factory line while you're off exploring. That's the twist that turned "Pokémon with guns" from a cheap joke into a genuine hook. It's less "gotta catch 'em all" and more "gotta build a small industrial empire staffed entirely by adorable creatures."

Pocketpair shipped it into early access in January 2024, watched it explode almost overnight, and then spent two years quietly filling in the rest. 1.0 is the studio finally sticking the landing on all of it.

Should you jump back in?

If you played Palworld at launch, hit the mid-game wall, and drifted off - this is the exact right moment to come back. The level cap jump from 65 to 80 alone means your old base and your old Pals have somewhere new to go, and doubling the map is not a small thing when the original world was already big.

Think of it like Slime Rancher meets a survival-crafter meets creature collecting - but with a genuine endgame bolted on now instead of a "coming soon" sign. The loop that hooked people two years ago is still the loop. There's just a lot more world wrapped around it.

If you're brand new and it's sitting right there on Game Pass, there's basically no reason not to try it. Worst case you play a weird, funny survival game for a weekend. Best case you lose 80 hours to the World Tree.

Either way - the barrier's finally down. Go see what was up there.
