The RAMpocalypse: why your next GPU - and your next handheld - costs a small fortune

What blew up
Numbers first, because they're wild:
- Consumer RAM jumped 110% in Q1 alone - and a 32GB DDR5 kit that was $80 to $120 a year ago now starts near $375
- SSD prices jumped up to 147% in Q1 (entry-level 1TB NVMe)
- The RTX 5090 is going for $3,500 to $4,500
- The rest of the RTX 50 line is up 15% (5070) to 32% (5080)
- AMD reportedly raised the price of the GPU and GDDR kits it sells board partners about 10% in July - the second hike in six months
- ASUS quietly bumped some RX 9070 XT models up to 17.5%
IDC now forecasts average PC prices climbing 18.3% across 2026. This isn't one bad SKU. It's the whole stack getting more expensive at once.
Why it's happening (and it's not scalpers this time)
Here's the actual root cause - AI data centers are eating all the memory.
Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron control more than 95% of the world's DRAM. All three have been shifting their factories away from the regular memory that goes in your PC and toward HBM - the expensive stacked memory that sits next to AI accelerators. When the entire industry decides the datacenter buyer with the bottomless budget matters more than the gamer buying a 32GB kit, guess who gets squeezed.
So the same AI boom that's flooding your feed is quietly reaching into your build budget and taking the RAM out of it. GDDR6 spot prices have roughly tripled. That's why your next GPU costs more - the memory on the card got more expensive before it ever reached the shelf.
🤘 The real issue isn't a temporary spike you wait out over a weekend. Analysts don't expect real relief until late 2027, and Intel is pointing at 2028 before things normalize. This is a two-year problem, not a two-month one.
It's hitting handhelds too
This isn't just a desktop-builder tax. Valve jacked the Steam Deck OLED price up $240 back in May and pointed straight at memory and storage costs as the reason. Every Windows handheld maker is dealing with the same math. When the RAM and storage in these little machines doubles in cost, the sticker on the box moves with it - and it's a big reason the whole handheld market got more expensive this year.
So what do you actually do?
Not panic - but be smart. Here's how I'd think about it in tiers:
- You already have a working rig? Sit tight. This is the single worst moment in 40 years to "upgrade because it's time." Ride your current parts. My 3090 is going to be earning its keep for another year whether it likes it or not.
- You actually need to build now? Buy the RAM and SSD first, before they climb again - those are the parts bleeding fastest. Look hard at prebuilts (some ship without RAM, which is weird, but it can actually save you money right now), and don't be too proud to buy used or drop a GPU tier.
- First-time builder on a budget? Real talk - a console or a handheld might be the smarter entry point in 2026. A locked-in $500-ish box looks a lot better when a comparable PC's RAM alone is a moving target.
The build-it-yourself dream isn't dead. It just got expensive for reasons that have nothing to do with games and everything to do with a datacenter you'll never see. Buy what you need, skip what you don't, and wait out the stuff that can wait.
